Edward Davis Townsend letter : San Francisco, to his mother : ALS, 1853 Dec. 13 and 15.

Includes an account of the wreck of the mail steamer Winfield Scott and the efforts of its skipper, Captain Blount, to mitigate the disaster. Included also are details of William Walker's "robber expedition" against Lower California and General Hitchcock's subsequent seizure of the brig Arrow.

Edward Davis Townsend (August 22, 1817 – May 10, 1893) was Adjutant General of the United States Army from 1869 to 1880. The son of David S. & Eliza (Gerry) Townsend and grandson of Vice President Elbridge Gerry, Townsend was educated at Boston's Latin School before graduating from the United States Military Academy in 1837.
